A new chapter for Back Church Lane

We were appointed by CITICLIENT to refurbish 122 Back Church Lane, a 19,000 sq ft office building in Whitechapel. Designed by Narrative, the refurbishment keeps the building's industrial character while reshaping how it supports the working day.

It begins at the entrance. The reception has been reworked as a place to gather as much as to arrive. Oak, terrazzo, artwork and screens create a considered welcome, while an adjoining lounge accommodates visitors and informal meetings.

The level 4 terrace extends the workplace outdoors, accommodating team lunches, open-air meetings and the occasional game of table tennis.

Glazing, doors and other parts of the original fit-out were kept and reused. Beyond the building line, the neighbouring yard was cleared and the graffiti removed, improving the building's presence on the street.

The result is a workplace that balances focus, collaboration and respite.⁠
